Does anyone have any detailed instructions for how to replace the front fender?
I have found lots of instructions for replacing the front clip (which I may yet do) but I wanted to look at whether I can just replace the fenders. My 79 has front end damage from a collision. Fenders need replacing on both sides (from door to bumper).
If I can't get instructions, what is the best way to remove them? Cut along the bonding strip? From what I have read this repair needs to have access from the underside of the fender to lay in the new glass. What needs to be done to accomplish this?
Yes, saving the bonding strip in the process. If you are replacing only the fenders, leave the hood and hood surround panel bonded and in place.
...From what I have read this repair needs to have access from the underside of the fender to lay in the new glass....
You should not need to lay up new fiberglass. Your replacement fenders will bond to the stock bonding strip, the inner fender skirts, and on the cowl at the door opening.
Eckler's book shows fender replacement. It might be out of print.
Here's an 81 showing the fender/hood surround bonding seam.
The seam will be in very nearly the same place on your car. The trick is to locate the seam (sand/strip paint and primer), get the old fender removed, and save the bonding strip underneath.
