I have been looking and reading on this forum for quite a while now and love it, so now i am wanting to buy a 1969 possibly a 1968 vert 4 speed bb, not to worried about numbers matching, just want a nice driver with a good paint job that might need to be finished. So im wondering how much something like this would cost me? Thanks
Prices will be all over the board...since by definition a non-numbers matching car is no longer original, there's no real value guide to go by. All you can do is find something that meets your requirements and go from there. Cars like what you're looking for aren't rare, and it is a pretty bad market right now for sellers.
It's way too easy to get into a car that needs some work, then you decide "While I've gone this far I may as well do this...then this...then this" It can be a project that grows and spirals before you know it or have a handle on it.
The best advice is get the best car you can reasonably afford...it will be cheaper in the long run than finding a fixer-upper. You can plan for the big items...it's the little stuff you don't think about that can kill you financially.
Hi David,
You have very good taste! A 69, Convertible, 427, 4-speed. As a group these are probably the most costly 68-82 cars.
Whether the particular car is a 'project', needs 'tlc', is a driver, a nom but otherwise quite original, or a Top Flight/Bloomington car, it will be expensive compared to other cars with those descriptions because you're looking for the most desirable car.
Just as an example.... a '72' convertible, 454 (still a bb), 4-speed car will likely not cost as much as an otherwise equal '69' car.
I'm thinking $25k, to begin, for what you described.
Just my thoughts!
Regards,
Alan

Sounds like you have champagne taste on a beer budget. We can all tell you what we think certain cars are worth, but how much are you willing to spend in total...purchase price plus cost to finish? Then we can tell you how realistic your expectations are. Sound like a deal?
any big block convertible will be in the 30's that is in good condition, sure you can find one low to mid 20's but be very carefull regarding rust and underside condition. you will pay alot for good metal and a BB convertible. Especially a 69 which by most surveys the most desirable

David define "nice driver with a good paint job". When I think of nice driver I think of reliable and fun. Both of which are not cheap. Any 40+ year old car is not going to be relaible or fun to drive if it hasn't been "rebuilt". Good paint to me means not show quality but very presentable and not needing repaint. To meet those requirements and add in a big block I think you will be at 25K+. Even is this market I don't think you can "steal" a NOM BB '69 vert that's in good condition. I do realize you are not looking for an "investment quality" car but I think you will have to pay for what you want. Sometimes a little "over paying" up front turns out to be the cheaper way out in the long run.
Good luck in your search. When you find something you can always post it up and ask for opinions. As you already see we have lots of them.
Thats exactly what im thinking of, not show quality but very presentable and not needing repaint, I dont want to deal with the hasltle of paint and body but dont mind doing any of the mechanical, I am a certified Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge technician and do alot of side work on corvettes, mostly C3's, so I will be doing all the wrenching on the car when I find the right one. Thanks again for all the info.
