Default Tire size for 72 lt1

I have a 72 lt1 that I am restoring. The car came with P245/60R15 tires. I was installing the spare tire holder today and those tires seems to be too big for the holder to close. What is the correct tire size (original equipment) for this car?

The stock spare is not full size...someone will chime in with the size.

Hello Vince,
The original tire size is F-70-15.
You can use a radial tire GR-70-15 these were used starting in 1973.
What is the paint and trim codes for your 1972 LT-1?
What are the factory options in your Corvette?
What is the VIN?
Thanks,
Drew Papsun

The car came with F70-15 size tires. These tires were 26.9" in diameter. If you want the same size tire as original you can buy reproduction F70-15 tires or the modern equivalent that is 26.9" in diameter; 215/70 15. Many of us like to use slightly (or not so slightly) wider tires. I have slightly larger 225/70 15s on my 68.

Drew,
The paint code is 979 (Targa Blue). The trim code is 404. It is a coupe with 4 speed manual, no A/C, adding PS & PB. The Vin is 1Z37L2S518850.

The F70-15 (factory original size) tires are equivalent to 215R70-15 tires by today's coding. However, most folks like a wider tire with the 60 series height ratio. All '68-72 cars will accept 235 width tires without rubbing. Anything wider may rub when at steering full travel. The tire tub should be able to accept 28" diameter tires [at least]. The tub can be lowered to accept wider tires by extending the inboard (2) 'hanger' bolts and the rear release bolt.

To my knowledge, all spare tires for '68-72 (at least) were full-sized tires.

When I purchased the car, it had P245/60R15 virtually new tires (5 including spare). Guess I will go back with the P215/70R15 tires since I am trying to stay original. Maybe someone would be interested in purchasing the P245/60R15 tires cheap.

225/70 R15 on mine and the spare fits very nicely in the spare tire tub.

As stated above, you can store the 245-60 R 15 in the tub by lowering the bolts. If not already there, get the proper size nut to fit the front bolts for the tub support, then when the have been lowered enough to get a wider size tire in, run the nut up and they will stay where you put them
I ran the 245 like this for years with no problem.
