Engine block colour
Hi all,
What colour should a 1968 327/350hp engine block be as it left the factory.
Cheers Rob H

Chevy engine orange...just like all Chevy V8 engines from 1956 through the late 70's (when some idiot decided "blue" was better).

No disrespect to those who have blue blocks...I prefer the orange.

Not sure better had anything to do with the blue. The lawsuit had
everything to do with the blue.

Can't recall the details, but in the early 70s someone bought a new Buick or Pontiac or Oldsmobile and discovered it had a Chevrolet engine in it. Still a GM engine, but the new owner sued. Beginning in the fall of 77, GM changed the color of its engines to corporate blue and added a disclaimer to all new vehicles to the effect that the engine could be from any division of GM.
FWIW: the 82 Crossfire blocks might be black.

Well, if you
remembered it, and I
knew about it, how old does that make me?

Could just be me. I would go with the blue you found. The 84 X-fires were black. I am perfectly capable of confusticating the two.

At one time, Pontiac and Oldsmobile were blue, a touch lighter than what became GM Corporate blue. Can't say on Buick and Caddie.

Hi,
I think Buick had red, Pontiac had light metallic grayish blue, and Olds had gold.
Regards,
Alan

I can't say for the other GM engines but Old's were Gold on the small block i.e. 330 & 350. Blue metallic on the big blocks i.e. 400, 425 & 455

That's how I remember it also.
I had a 68 Buick Skylark convertible and the engine was red-orange.
I think my 66 skylark was blue. It had the aluminum block 300 cu.

The more I think about if the Old's 455 was blue and the 400 & 425 was Bronze. In the A body cars.

Had a 300 nailhead; it was a light turquoise blue. Both 72 Skylarks I've had were red.
BTW, early 60's Cadillacs were a very dark blue....and I think they stayed a shade of blue for many years after.

tobyte1 ....
That paint color may say "Vermillion" on the can; but once it's on a Chevy V8....it's "Chevy Engine Orange".
P.S. Isn't 'vermillion' more of a true red? I didn't think it had much of an orange tinge to it.

Probably closer to red. The early V8s (55-57. possibly later) were definitely more red than orange.
