Default How to identify a MOOG ball joint

I've been on the hunt to make sure that the 3rd set of ball joints I purchase/received are genuine MOOG (mfg USA). I recently purchased Moog k6035 for 1970 Vert 350 application. Some conflicting information from our great suppliers had me questioning the authenticity of the Moogs in transit. So I called Moog and spoke to a support tech, he pulled out the spec sheet and explained the following:

on the stud of the ball joint the number 256
on the boot 6251
on the instruction page f1715
on the misc parts bag kb2529

The BJs received are genuine Moog parts inspected & identified (rockauto.com)

This is for the lower ball joints. I ordered Moog upper and lower balljoints and tie rod ends from Amazon (they were the cheapest and ship free). I had to send one of the lowers and one of the tie-rod ends back because they were wrong.

The one on the left is the imposter

The upper ball joints have 029 on the end of the stud and Moog written on the dust boots.

They also have the huge can on the top with 680 imprinted

The tie-rod ends have 180 on the stud ends and also have Moog on the boots.

I have never had any trouble with stuff I ordered from Rockauto. I did however go through a few tie rod ends from Amazon as someone boxed the wrong parts in the box for the part I order. I have an old post on here about check your parts. Here is the link.

Your incorrect tie-rod end looks like the one I recieved too - Moog part, but definitely for another car.

I have heard issues with the wrong part in the box from RockAuto too. I'm not sure if I would blame the supplier. I would surmise that there's either quality control issues at Moog or thieves are returning inferior parts for refund and keeping the Moogs.

Yea, I think the other tie rod end in the box was for a C4 corvette. I think there was just a mix up at the factory one day.

I did. Ordered 2 brake rotors, they shipped 1. Took a long time to finally get them to ship the second one. I was not impressed with them. The whole time I got the impression they really couldn't care less.

I hope I never have to call them about an issue.

Of course even places I have had trouble with I still use. To me it comes down to price. If it is cheap enough I am willing to put up with some issues.

This is some interesting info.....I recently replaced my ball joints, tie rod ends, and idler arm with Moog parts purchased from Amazon. Said Made in USA on the boxes(although in several different languages), this is the only info I had to go by to make sure they were real Moog components, or so I thought
Thanks for posting this.... I'm going to have to pull a front wheel and break out the inspection mirror & check this out
