I am cleaning and repainting the underside of my car, question is does everone paint the fiberglass panels on the bottom or do you leave them as they are, it appears that mine was not painted from the factory or 38 years of paint has worn off ?
Fiberglass panels, in general, are not going to be painted on the bottom. You will most likely find some overspray paint from blackout on certain parts.
You should find undercoating in the wheel wells - not to stop rust, but as a protection to the fiberglass from rocks being cast up by the tires.
First two pics. show what was left after a pinion seal leak. Back of storage compartments were not undercoated or painted. I used 3M brand undercoating in the pale green can. I covered alot more than the factory did. Painted over the undercoating with Krylon Satin black. Last two pics. show results. Nothing was undercoated past the diff. crossmember or foward of the storage compartments. Fiberglass above fuel tank left unpainted also. mike...
Hi,
Sometimes the underbody can be made to look pretty nice.
It takes a LOT of gentle cleaning and then a couple of coats of semi-gloss clear.
This gives a look similar to the factory finish, but a little nicer.

Alan
