Default '73 Engine Compartment - pics

Here is the first posted pics of my '73 L48 Engine compartment.

Looking for any "helpful" tips.

I'm trying to keep it mostly stock.

I know:

incorrect valve covers
incorrect compressor
air cleaner not showing (I have complete with hood seal)
TCS / fast idle solenoid missing
Smog equipment removed (previous owner)
heater hoses not installed yet

Very nice!

If you're looking to make it as factory stock as possible:

-check valve on brake booster should be black
-alternator fan should be plated/natural not painted
-bolts on intake manifold should be painted engine orange
-coolant recovery tank is for '74 and up. originals are almost impossible to find though

Good tips! Thanks.

Also, I think the Coil Bracket is supposed to be plated, not painted..

Ignition shielding.

Here ya go. Good reference. Lots of stock. black and white photos. Worth the cost of a copy.

Valve covers are not stock for the L-48, but they look good. I could learn to live with them.

If you want specifics, order the NCRS Judging Guide. It explains correct factory finishes and most things under the hood.

Hi u,
Engine compartment looks very nice indeed!
For a VERY stock look I'd change the plastic wire ties on the the pvc and evap hoses to cloth electrcal tape... it gives a more period look.
Nice Work!
Regards,
Alan

Looks very nice! I've never seen gold exhaust manifolds before!
Here's a pic of a mint restored 73 L-48 engine for reference.
Keep the aluminum valve covers though. Much nicer than the painted ones.
Post more pics of the rest of the car!
Have fun!

Looks good.

What type of a/c compressor is that?

It is a Sanden - with horizontal exits (not vertical). Recommended by Custom A/C outfit in Dallas (sorry can't remember the model number).

The other models of Sanden will work, but require some gymnastics on the custom tubing...

Agree with "Alan 71" on the Cloth Tape for the PVC. Black plastic ties are temporary.

Ignition shielding will be one of the last items added.

Not quite 'mint'

The smog system is missing and the water pump is a converted truck unit. The wiper arms are also later year service replacements.

Well, the manifolds were gray (Eckler's Manifold dressing). After the engine had run about 2-3 hours, it turned (burned) to a tan/gray.

What is the decal on your fan shroud? Nice engine compartment!

Looks like a replacement ac compressor....on the fan shroud it's probably a gas station sticker indicating anti freeze replacement.

It's not a "replacement" compressor. I just opted for a compressor that uses 4 HP verses the GM compressor that uses 18 HP.

I'm pretty sure the decal is a factory decal...

yes, I had the original steering wheel leather wrapped (Chuck Pelton - this forum). And mistakenly ordered the incorrect loop mats - should have ordered the cut pile (like the carpet)... DUH
