Default 79 Stingray wreck = Solid Engineering

So, Today I was heading to work, down a main thoroughfare, going the speed limit, 50 MPH, and had a green light.
9:20 A.M.
There's a newer black F150 in the opposite lane in the left turn lane. He decides to turn right in front of me.
By the time I realize he's going to turn and not stop or gun it to make it, I slam the brakes and they lock up, skidding, right into the front bumper at an angle.
When I started it to move out of traffic, the engine did not sound good, and it was rebuilt only two years ago.

I was fine but shaking a bit when I got out. You know how these older cars are supposed to splinter apart like in the crash test videos, well it held up great. The 79 has the same frame design since the first C2's in 1963(?). So I'm not dead like I should be.
Anyways, the other driver is at fault, and I don't have to pay. And I have a second Corvette as back up, so !@#$ the stupidity of the situation.

That sucks, glad it wasn't anything too serious, glad you are ok. Looks like the vette will make it back on the road one day

North Market at the intersection by Podnuh's. Got me some BBQ while waiting on the tow truck.

I recognize your car, were you at the show at Collier's the other week?

Good to see it was a minor incident.

Time for a custom tilt front end now.

I'd also make sure the shop checks the frame for any distortion.

The shop I took it to is the only one I'd ever trust to work on it. They know their older cars.

Custom Tilt?

Yep. Were you there?

So sorry to hear about your accident. Thank goodness you weren't hurt.

Are you in any of the local Corvette clubs?

If you're looking for a GREAT body shop that does EXCELLENT work, call Krystal Auto Collision in Bossier City (752-3300) ask for Kevin (owner). Tell Kevin I sent you. He's the only shop that I would allow to work on my Vette....and I'm very very picky.

Keep me posted on your progress.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was next to the road between a few brightly colored 40's looking coupes.
The car was dirty though. Had the hood down as well. Had to leave after an hour though.

I'm not an official member of RCCC, but I'll show up to a meeting every once in a while when I can.

Right now I used my last free AAA tow to take it to ACS by Chase in Haughton.
Until I get the other guy's insurance info from the police report, which will be available in 5 days, I won't be able to have it repaired.
I'll give Kevin a call.

Dunno. It's NADA value is 25,000, so it won't be totaled, but the parts will be a substantial cost. It may be estimated differently than other cars.

FWIW, I once had a guy in a pickup going my direction turn across my bow to make a sudden left, and I ended up tagging him just ahead of the rear wheel with my '78. After a bit of rubbing compound you had to be within ~20 feet to notice the crack along the front bonding seam behind the bumper cover. The fender on the truck required replacement.

That said, while it may not be suspeciously obvious to the naked eye, the '79 was the product of constant evolution over the years in the area of front, side and rear impact safety. But, I wouldn't expect an early C3 to have fared as well, and it's worth noting many an owner has removed bits which were designed to improve safety from later models in the name weight reduction. Food for thought...

You got lucky. Glad you are OK!

One of my biggest fears is getting hit in mine. We take for granted how much safety technology is packed into the newer cars.

Read about a 77 that was crashed straight on at 65 mph w/o serious injury & rebuilt.

I talked to a guy who rolled a 76 at about 90+ going around a curve.
Car was destroyed, he was fine. He won't buy any car after that w/o the 3 point seat belt which he was using.

Ditto on your safety: glad you're ok.

Shame what happened to the car and it looks like after a thorough inspection, a good summary can be laid out to get the proper fix.

Hope the bozo who pulled out in front of you has his insurance paid up so there's no delay getting started on your stuff.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I really dislike inattentive drivers such as ran in front of you and like motorcycles, we have to drive not only for ourselves, but for everyone who may be around us. Take care everyone.

Truck driver info please.

Guy? Gal?
Old or young?
On the phone? Reading a newspaper? Putting on makeup?
Intoxicated?

How did they explain their actions?
