Did the 1970 convertible vette come stock with speaker holes in the upper dash pad? The parts stores only show upper pads with the speaker holes for the 1970 and later. The 1969 pad that they offer does not have the holes.
My car is a 1970 but has no speaker holes but it came with a stereo, does that mean I have a pad that is not intended for the 1970?
Both of my '70's still have their original upper dash pads. Both have speaker holes. I would suspect your '70 has had it's dash pad replaced with an earlier one.
Only '68 and '69 had the radio speakers in the kickpanel areas. '70 cars had the speakers in the dash (only) and that stayed the same for several more years. A previous owner has changed the upper dash and moved the speakers, apparently. Personally, I like having the speakers in BOTH locations...good highs from the dash speakers and decent mids/lows from the kickpanel area.
Thanks everyone. Just another discrepancy that I have with my car. I knew that it had been wrecked sometime in the past but I always thought that the interior was original. Bummer!!!!!
I'd guess that the original dash pad was cracked/split and the PO found a '68 or '69 used pad in the right color (and at the right price) and just moved the speakers. If you were to have speakers in one position or the other, the best choice IMO would be in the kickpanels. Of course, speakers in both places is better than in either one.
