Default trailing arm welds NICE! NOT!

When I rebuilt my trailing arms, I was really surprised by the quality of the factory welds on them. The regular welder must have been on break while the corporate secretary took over and did it with her eyes closed. That's some sloppy welding.
How are your welds on your arms?

All the TAs I've seen have been that way. Splatter all over.

When I redid mine I ground the splatter off.

The welds on mine are 38 years old, and still holding strong

You think those are bad.. you should look at some on your frame. It kills me to see a drag weld because the guy was to lazy to pick up the rod....

I'm missing the point. They're 40 years old and were massed produced. No robot welders in those days. Your two originals survived, ugly welds and all.

I guess that when I rebuild the arms, I have to resist grinding and making them look pretty so I can preserve the originality of them.

I'm just complaining. That's all.

True. Originals are not necessarily pretty.

Same with the frame. I cleaned up a few areas that will be seen in the engine compartment before sending it off to sandblast and powder coat, but I found no cracks anywhere. And I really inspected it.

That would prove the success of the GM designs, even with these sloppy welds on the arms and the frame, you still rarely see a failed trailing arm or a frame because of these welds.
