Hi my,
Since the same cable drives both, it has to be in the speedometer head. I've not had one apart so I'm clueless. Hopefully someone else has.
By any chance does the trip odometer work?
Regards,
Alan
Theres gears inside the speedometer that turn this mechanism. Perhaps one broke or is spinning loose. Don't know of any other way to see, but to remove the speedometer for look. Theres a site that advertises here "speedometerrepairguy.com" in MN, and hear he's pretty good.

Alan, no the trip odo is not turning, I also noticed I dont have the reset **** to reset it
70 vert, manual , Speedometer works the odometer doesn't. Your thoughts or suggestions? Thanks
Join the club. My trip Odometer was jammed, locking up the other odometer also. I ordered two different trips, both made in china and jammed worse than the original. Took the original apart and cleaned, replacing the white (original faded) tenths wheel with one from the imports. While in the guts, you can replace the drive gear behind the speedo head.

Any shortcuts to fixing / replacing the speedo or pull the dash and go from there?

STOP!!!!! You don't have to pull the dashboard off! Here is a link to some instructions on removing a '78-'82 speedo, I don't know how different a '70 is, but it should give you some idea. Can anybody square us away, here?

I no nothing about a 78 thru 82 Speedo, but if someone develops a way to get a 70 speedo out w/o removing the driver side dash, then they will become a hero to the early C3 community.

Scoot didnt see the link you mentioned in your message. Also I dont have the trip reset. How hard is it to install that with the possibility of maybe the gears being jammed and maybe movement would free it up. Speedo was replaced 3k miles ago when car went through restoration
Hi,
I agree with David.
I had my tach out a few weeks ago. I really don't see a way to get the tach or speedo out SAFELY with the pad in place or even loose.
The LAST thing you want to do is put any pressure on that 40 year old dash pad.
For me the worst part is getting that little thin plastic astro-vent duct hooked back up, and it's wingnut in place.
After all these years still dread going behind the driver's side dash or center gauge cluster.

Alan
The first worm bushing is out on the speedo head... When this happens, gear A on the first worm and magnet in the picture below, chews up gear B on the second worm gear and the odometer stops working.
Replacing the gear would only be a band-aide and eventually the end play in the first worm will get so bad that it will actually catch the speedcup... and then the wheels will really fall off the wagon. When the magnet catches the speed cup it slams the needle and can/will either break the speed cup shaft and the needle.
The head needs serviced that's for sure... I have instructions on the web site on how to remove the dash pads from the car if this helps you. But I'm about to revise it for just the left side.

Can the trip reset be installed without removing the speedometer from the dash? Do you have instructions? Cost ? Thanks
The speedometer must be removed from the car to install a trip odometer reset.
Are there instructions. There are instructions on our site on how to remove the dash pad from the car however, I'm thinking about doing one for just taking the left side out.
The best way to remove the left dash pad is to remove the steering column first, then remove the two screws from the jamb, the screws from the center bezel and the three screws over the top of the upper pad.
You'd want to take the tach or speedo cables loose at the other end so that you can pull them inward toward you and then disconnect them. This works better than trying to get behind the dash and unscrew/clip them.
There is a bit more to it than what I've posted above but that should give you an idea.
