The stingray right side emblum had been loose for a while and recently it fell off and I lost it. I ordered a new one which will be here Friday. How do these things go on and how do i get it to stay on?
how do I get to the back side to put the speed nuts on.
If you have A/C, Power brakes, you will probably have to get to them from underneath. Remove the sort of triangular shaped splash shield behind the front tire between the body & frame. Then you can reach up.
I just checked two catalogs and 76 should not have holes. The script was held on with adhesive backing. 69-73 has the studs. A PO must have drilled the holes I'm guessing.
Thought that they had adhesive tape on the back and the pins/holes were just for alignment.
Tom...
That is how the emblems on my '76 are installed as well. I couldn't figure out an easy way to get to the pins so I just rely on the tape to hold the emblem in place.

You are correct. I just checked my 70 AIM and it says to remove paper backing and apply a 10 pound load for 15 seconds. The pins are for alignment. There's a revision note nut removed dated 12/23/69.
My 74 has no speed nuts. Just alignment holes and double sided tape. I reapplied them with a little silicone sealant in the alignment holes and they've been on for years.
Well, the '71 had speed nuts and it kept the script in place. The adhesive was an overall cost reduction when including the cost of installation on the line. I do think it's a good idea to put some double-sided tape or [mild] contact adhesive on the backside of the script, just so it won't vibrate and rub through the paint over time. So, when I refurbed mine, I applied both methods.
After removing them for a paint job, I found that the adheasive on the back was not strong enough to hold them on again. I ran an 8-32 die over the pins and secured the emblems with 8-32 nylon insert locknuts.
Well, let's just say I like to do things a little different. The pins on the C. O. R. V. E. T. T. E. letters on the back, were worn out and the speed nuts would not bite anymore. Did the same thing here, except that I used a 6-32 die cut new threads, used locknuts and now everything is nice and tight.

emblem tape.
The assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows how they were installed at St. Louis.
If you do not have an AIM, you're gonna want one. All the aftermarket providers carry the AIMs. Do you have an owner's manual for your car? Lots of valuable information in the owner's manual.
The rear most pin can be reached thru the fresh air vent on the pass. side. My '76 has pins but no speed nuts. When I replace I will probably use the nuts.
No nuts are needed if installed correctly, the tape will hold them for years, mine are 35 years old and are still holding. Now there are some cheaper emblems out there so don't buy them, pay a little better for the real GM.
