I am having a car inspected, and the owner wants to use this mechanic, who he knows. He is a retired war veteran who has been buying, selling, fixing, and restoring corvettes since his teens. He started the Corvette club in Kansas City and now does repair work on vettes as a hobby.
Does anyone know him, heard of him, spent time with him, etc.
I want to get a feel of reliability and skill. (aside from what was listed already)
It's unusual for a buyer to use the ower's mechanic for an inspection prior to sale. You should use someone who you have selected so there is no "bias" toward the owner. If the seller wants to bring in his own mechanic for 'discussion purposes', that is a reasonable request.

Yes, I am aware of that. I have been struggling with the issue too. But basically what I am getting is that he is the corvette specialist in the area, he just happens to know him and did some work on the car. This is another reason why I am trying to get a feel of the guy, to see if his reputation holds based on what he is telling me.
It doesn't make any difference. He is already biased toward the owner. If there is a minor problem, he likely won't make an issue of it. You need your own guy, if you want an honest/unbiased assessment of this car.

i would want to have someone i chose to inspect any vehicle i was looking at. it should be the buyer's choice of who he uses (since i would expect to have to pay for the services). thank him and seek your own inspection would be my suggestion.
Car dealerhsips around here charge at least $95 per hour shop time. One vette expert around here charges $85 for his time, $55 for his workers. I suppose it depends on how thorough you want him to be. If he drives it, puts it up on a rack, takes some things apart, inspects for numbers and dates...you could easily get into 4 hours, $300-$350. If you want a written report...add another hour.
