Default Question on 1972 saddle interiors

Hi. Frequent lurker with a question about saddle interiors in the 1972 vette. Was looking at some listings on ebay. There are a couple of cars with unrestored 417 interiors (per the plate picture) and the interiors were on the dark side. Another car with a restored interior also a 417 interior code had a much lighter interior.

I went to the wilcox site to check interiors and they offer light and dark saddle interior pieces.

My question is did the factory offer more than one shade of saddle interiors under the 417 code for 1972? If so how do you tell which came on a particlular car.

Thanks

Are you sure they were all 417 interiors? Perhaps one (or more) were 417 L (leather). The leather saddle interior was darker than the vinyl saddle interior.

72 was dark saddle.

If you had the base, you got loop carpet, regular door panels & console and vinyl seat covers with pattern that runs vertically.

If you upgraded to deluxe interior, you got cut pile carpet, deluxe door panels (wood trim); deluxe trim around console (wood) and leather seat covers with a stitch pattern that runs Horizontal...

Deluxe (sans console trim..)

The info I have is that 417 is the vinyl saddle and that 421 is the leather saddle. Here are some links to the cars.

This is the car with the new interior. The plate photo clearly calls for a 417 interior and as you can see it looks light or almost beige.

On this car the description says it has a new 417 interior but the interior looks much darker than the first car.

Lastly this car is unrestored and there is a plate photo showing a 417 interior. As you can see the interior is darker like the second car I listed.

All are very nice cars. Just wondering why one interior is lighter.

wow wow wow... that's all I can say about that 1972 ontario orange. NOW i have something to shoot for !!. The interior in the Orange 72 is correct. When you look at the pictures I posted, daylight does make dark saddle look a little lighter.. however, the interior in the first vette your posted does NOT look correct. It looks like light saddle to me.. probably a 73 interior? or wrong color. That 72 BB orange is stunning and very very very correct. wow.

Thanks for your replies. All of the 72's with saddle interiors that I've seen on the net have been darker like the photos you posted. Thats why I was kind of scratching my head with the first one. As I mentioned in my original post Wilcox does offer light saddle interior pieces for the 72 which is also why I raised the question.

Are the photo's that you posted your car? If so very nice!

In 1972 there were only 2 versions of Saddle interiors;
Trim code 417 was saddle/vinyl
Trim code 421 was saddle/leather
The above poster pointed out the differences between the two very nicely. In your second post with the 3 links, the first 2 were of the same car(at least it was for me, when I opened them)and the third link for that unrestored car from Canada(beautiful car, by the way)shows the proper 417 code saddle vinyl with the vertical comfort weave strips. the difference in color can be attribured to many factors, for instance with a flash picture my interior looks like this:

Without flash the color looks much different:

hope this helps some
