Hey everyone, I am new at this and have recently purchased my dream vette. It's an 82 and I have heard that they can be toublesome because of their crossfire injection. Just wanted to hear some opinions and what would be the cause of the rough idle?
Get a bottle of Techron at the auto parts store.
Dump it into a close to empty tank. Fill tank with premium.
Drive the car on the highway -- run that tank of gas through.
See if that helps.
Next step. Spark plugs etc.
I just got through fixing a similar problem. Mine was a vacuum leak, and it runs great now, and idles smooth. With all the vacuum hoses that are on these cars, its not hard to get a leak. My advice is go to autozone, get a $25 vacuum gauge, and a $3 vacuum plug kit. And go through one by one and plug off each hose one at a time until you find the one thats leaking. Then again, it could be a number of issues.
I will agree that running some fuel cleaning 'stuff' through the system should be your first step. The Cross-Fire system had two throttle bodies, but they are still fuel injectors and have nozzles, etc. SeaFoam is another good candidate to do that job, as are any of the other [good brand name] fuel injector cleaners.
If that doesn't help, then checking your computer for any trouble codes would be the next step. (And, if the computer isn't working properly...that's likely to be your problem.) If the ECM system is working and you have no trouble codes, THEN start changing parts with a "tune up".
Hey guys, just wanted to thank you all or that great info. I have changed the spark plugs and the wires are new. I guess my next step is to check all of the vacuum hoses. She runs really well once on the road, its just when I come to a stop that she has the rough idle.
