Getting frustrated with trying to match 12 year old Daytona Yellow laquer paint.Replaced L88 hood with stock Big block hood. Auto paint stores telling my painter that computer matching won't work with old laquer colors? Is that true? Any ideas how to get better match? Laquer seems to be quite the issue here in washinton. Is it just trial and error?...
Hi DG,
I was talking to a painter this week about matching old, or older acrylic lacquer.
His supplier is willing to help, but asks HIM to evaluate the mixed color after shooting a test panel, and then describe the change needed.... more silver... less green, etc., etc after seeing the 'formula' for the test panel.
He had I believe 7 or 8 panels before he got a certain midyear green the way he wanted. His wife helps him with suggestions.
So, yes it is a trial.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
The old paint job on the car is 12 yrs old???? Good luck with that. Take the time and just repaint the whole car i would say. nothing worse than trying to match OLD paint it never looks right. just my 2 cents.
If it is a solid paint color, matching shouldn't be that difficult. Metallics are a lot trickier. There are lots of 'paint guys'; then there are the real paint experts who know how to get close matches. If the paint on the rest of the car is good, you obviously don't want to paint the whole car. Ask around who is good at matching paint, then you need to expect to pay significantly more to get a hood that matches well. Getting a good match may take some time and effort...but it is a LOT less expensive than painting the whole car.
