Default Engine number

I am pulling the numbers for a 1968 and I found some rust on the engine number making it hard to read. Any tricks to remove the rust without damaging the code?

Thanks,
Jason

A brass brush and scrub away, the numbers are stamped into the block.

Hi Jason,
I'd caution you about using ANY kind of metal brush or tool on the stamp pad. The reason being that besides the stamps that might be there, preserving any of the original surface that might be left is important too.
Is the pad so rusty you can't read anything? Usually pads can't be read because of paint and dirt.
In order for me to make a suggestion I'd like to see a picture of what you're facing.
I'm thinking of starting with a THIN coat of gel rust remover to begin to determine if there's any stamp remaining; but a picture first!
Regards,
Alan

Or light oil just to see if any numbers are there at all..............

+1 on the no metal tools recommendation.

I've used a green scotch brite pad to the clean stamp pad when looking for my numbers on the eng, trans, etc. A little water based degreaser such as purple power sold at autozone helps in cleaning too. (sometimes a lot is needed)

The rust doesn't look that bad. I think i would try some WD40 and the scotch pad. Lightly rub with the pad then remove with a rag. If more is need repeat wih a new section of the scotch pad.

Thank you, 69MA, the WD40 did the trick! I just sprayed it on the stamp and let it sit for a few seconds then wiped it off.

The stamp is T0502IL.
T = made in Tonawanda, New York
0502 = mm/dd assembled on May 2, 1968
IL = L36 with Rochester Q-Jet, hydraulic lifters and four speed

My reference book is Corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide, 2nd Edition (Motorbooks Workshop).

Great. How do you like the blue 68 in the Restoration Guide? It's mine.

VIN derivitive is also stamped on the pad. It will be to the left of the engine stamp. Keep working the WD-40. You're looking for 18Sxxxxxx.

Don't ever use a scrub pad or brush to clean a stap pad unless you want to ruin it or its a low value car.
