Default Mystery wire identification

I found this wire disconnected right next to my gas tank sending unit.
There doesn't seem to be a place for it to connect that I can find.

It is a black wire with a slip on plastic connector.

Anyone have an idea were it should be connected at if anywhere?
Thanks

i think that's the ground connection for the sending unit. there should be a lug on the sending unit where it attaches.

As JNB said that's the ground to your sending unit. There should be a tab that it plugs into on the sending unit.

Nope my gas guage hasnt worked since I bought the car. Looks like I may have found the reason.
It also looks like my connecting tab on the sender unit is either broken off or not like the on in the picture
It has a tab in the general area of the one in the picture, but it doesnt have the 90 degree bend in it and looks shorter.

With a strong enough soldering iron, you can solder a wire pigtail with a connector to the unit housing surface. Have done that several times and works well.

Using a soldering iron on a fuel tank (that has not been completely emptied) is not 'advisable'. You can connect that ground to any point on the tank or on the car's frame. To check it out first, just run a jumper wire from that loose connector to a grounding point and see if the fuel gauge works (key must be in "ON" or "ACC" position).
