Default 1968 vent trim
has anyone ever heard of a late 68 having the vent trim, like a 69 being either a factory or dealer installed option?

Option TJ2 (chrome and silver garnish moldings for the louvers) was only offered in 69. Came on over 11,000 69's.

The only ones I have seen on 68's were added by owners at some point in the car's life.

No. If you have a 68 with the trim, it was added by a previous owner.
