How do you removed the fixed antenna on a 1980 Corvette?
I want to put a car cover on the car, but before I make a spot for the antenna in the cover, I would like to see how easy it is to remove it for the time being.
Thanks.
(I assumed that it was like modern fixed antennas that just screw off, but no. There seems to be a base part that is too large to pull up through the designated hole.)
there should be a nut with 2 flats at the bottom, assuming it is a manual factory antenna
I loosened the nuts but the antenna falls back into the fender and is too big to pull through. Unless I am just completely overlooking something, I can't see a way to get it off.
Is there an easy way into the interior of the rear wheel well?

No. The antenna has to be accessed from underneath the car, above the muffler.
If it is an original antenna, it should have 2 nuts. A large, 6 sided one, that holds the antenna body into the car. The antenna itself, has a small round nut, with 2 flat spots on opposite sides of the round nut.
Below are pictures of a "typical" 69-82 manual antenna. The bezel shown is an earlier one, the 78-82 bezel is no longer available. By unscrewing the small round nut, at the end on the antenna mast, you should be able to pull the mast out of the antenna body.
If your antenna doesn't resemble this one, then it has been changed.
