Default The Dreaded Rust Monster

So, in my interior resto, I've discovered minor rust in the vent areas ahead of the door hinges, beneath where the windshield support metal is... (birdcage bottom?)... Anyway, before I install my sound and thermo barriers and carpet I want these areas "perfect" as well. I'd like to scrape and hit them with a rust inhibitor and just know the experts here have done all of this before. Any product, cleaning, technique, "what to look for", "what to avoid" suggestions would be appreciated.

For instance, has anyone used "Evapo-rust"? What works? what doesn't? Many thanks, in advance.

I have used Evaporust many times. It works best for dunking parts and waiting for it to work. I have not found a tank big enough to hold my entire frame. It will pull rust right out of the pits and leave beautiful bare metal.

It depends on how far you want to go with those pockets. When I did mine, I made sure no more water could enter that area, then I vacuumed out the rust and dirt in there. I then primed the area and left it for another day.

Just make sure any drain outlets in those areas are clear and open before you complete your work.

I'm using evaporust a lot, as a bath for small complicated and delicate pieces.
It works really well, remove the rust but leave the clean metal untouched (it's a shellating process, no acids involved).
I read somewhere a guys who cleaned his frame with it, by setting up a recirculating system that inject the liquid in the frame and retreive it where it leak out. Worked well, event if Evaporust company previously advised him it wouldn't.
Evaporust is a sugar based solution, so it needs to be cleaned before it dries and leave a sticky organic layer on the metal.
It's basically the hot-rodder mollasse bath trick on steroids.
One donwside of this product : it's expensive (10$ per liter here in Canada).

Another method is electrolysis, check post #12 of my resto thread .

There is also phosphoric acid, that works well at inhibiting rust (not removing).

I'm restoring a once rust bucket (80% of the car changed over the course of the resto), so I had my share.

I would use something like Eastwood Rust Encapsulator in those areas. Clean them as much as possible and either brush it on or buy the spray cans.

Thanks guys, the more info the better... Pulled the dash and found more surface rust... nothing too bad, but I'd like to stop it in its tracks.... good luck with that right?

Good grief Denpo... That was/is some project... Unbelievable. I think I'll have my hands full, too. But not that full.

What started out a simple interior update, has morphed into a money eating monster. Still smiling though.

First vette. First major lesson, 1 week to the day after purchase.

I'll upload some pictures Sunday before the games. I have birdcage repair in my immediate future. Ugghhh.

Solid info... Videos offer some big solutions... Luckily I have smaller problems. I have areas that I can't soak in a tub, portions of the car that are going to remain intack. I've scraped, vacuumed, and prepped for some kind of inhibitor spray or something I can brush into the affected areas.

I guess what I'm looking for is advice from those experienced with this portion of the resto to suggest products they've found that work best for the areas with surface rust and minor pitting that can't be removed from the car (though I imagine someone will suggest that there is nothing that CAN'T be removed from the car). I'm just trying to treat some areas I have no intention of seeing again. Once I'm sure any rust growth is eliminated I can get the floor sound and heat dampeners in, carpet, and replace all of the freshly painted instrument cluster bezels, and put the inside back together.

Thanks again for all the guidance.

would CLR work for smaller parts like...say, the small headlight springs and screws? I'm sure someone has tried it....results? Recommended?
