To aviod any further confusion are these the four fins with the arrows ( #'s 2-3-4-5 ) that the get the leading edge painted silver ? Some photos show the silver edge going around the turn signal circle too others dont ? what is correct ? I'm thinking IRON CROSS'S since he bought his new..........???
While mine are out, I would like to fix this.
Great question. What exactly is silver and what isn't?
This book was a recommendation from a CF member. I was reading through post and came across a post on sources for restoration. Lesson learned. Be careful and double check your sources. This book has been pionted out as being wrong.
It is generally a great book. I haven't heard of many complaints about inaccuracies. He did get that one thing backwards, and I suspect it was an editing error. There are mistakes in NCRS manuals also. You have to be skeptical and open minded.
As far as what parts were silver on original 68s - most that I have seen do not have paint on the top bar (#1), and I think it looks strange. The tricky part is that even original untouched cars are 44 years old and that silver paint (or whatever it is) wears off... and so does the memory of original owners.

Any better clarification ? IRONCROSS ? mine are off my car right now & I would like to add the correct silver to the leading edges that it belongs on...............ANYONE ?
As Hal suggested, when I was doing pine wood derby cars for the local scout troop, I used to go to the high end modelers shop.
They have a silver metalic felt tip paint pen.
It is great for you can control the amount of paint applied.
This is what I'm going to use on the 3 pieces when I get to it on my '68.
The testor paint company makes them.
They are approx. 6" long and an aluminum tube with a replaceable black cap. Just stripe it and go

ok, gotcha..............but I'm still trying to determine which of the leading edges to do EXACTLY & do I go around the turn signal circle as well or not ??

yes, aound the turn signal. Also, all leading edges with exception of the top one. Also, th epaint is not just the edge..it fades back about 1/2 ".
AVALON / IRON Great, one last question, does the 1/2 inch fade inwards go on the topside of the cross fin, or the bottom ? or both sides ?
I have some originals at home with paint on them....let me check but off the top of my head it is top and bottom. Still cannot figure out how the factory painted these things without it being very time consuming. Guess that's why they stopped in early 69.
If you look at the grill, there is a mold line that runs down the grill "fin" lengthwise. Again, not having them in front of me but I seem to remember the silver paint stretching back to that line. Hope that helps.

I know that center mold / rib line your talking about............can you just verify when you get home if it's painted 1/2 inch inwards both on top & bottom. Thanka AJ............

Wow,
This thread was like following a micro surgery process!!!
Unless you are going to have it inspected by some "experts"
I would just hit the leading edges from #2 rib down.
The Testors paint pen I described earlier would work well.
The 1/2" back may be difficult with a pen. Spraying, I imagine
would be difficult as overspray would be difficult to control.
Unless you go to an airbrush painter they are amazing.
My orig's just to reaffirm are faded but the silver high lights start with the 2nd rib and go down and are around the turn signal opening.
Just stripe it and go Bro!!!

Your car #'s predate mine & should be painted, maybe they are not originals & have been replaced ? or they have maybe faded or worn off...........or just missed in QC ?
