What are you actually measuring for bearing endplay?

Too much and (less so) too little endplay are undesirable things.

Unless you are referring specifically to Crankshaft endplay, which is determined by the thrust-flange on one main bearing and the thrust-surface on the crankshaft. You are measuring how much the crankshaft is able to move forward and back in the main saddles.
