I really do like having a high MPH speedo...having them stop at 85 is too much like having grandma in the car with you.
That said, my car can't mathmatically exceed ~125...not that I'd attempt it. I've had it up to 90 and that is about enough for a while. My speedo doesn't currently function, but I'm pulling 2500 RPM at 60 in 4th. Being as I'm starting to run out at 5200 RPM, that's about it.
Higher RPM mill, taller rear gearing, and a 5th gear would/could get you there, but I wouldn't dare it. Maybe someday on a wide open track after I've been through the car myself and replaced the ball steering with a rack. But then the aerodynamics will bite you...I understand these cars get light in the front at extreme speeds.
Was it a C3? I've gone 150+ in a 2002 Z06, but like I said, my C3 gets scary around 90, and would never attempt much more in a 30+ year old car. The were a few 120 mph runs in my old Z28 back when I was young and stupid though.
I never reached that, but the previous owner had a 4 speed in it. Then he decided to go back to the three.
LOL, nice ride but seriously, how do you see past that intake? Cops here would have me off the road in about two seconds if mine looked like that. BTW, there musthave been some transitional period in 79 because my car has the early speedo (140MPH) but many of the other parts I have had to replace over the years are late build parts, mine was made in March 79.

Well, if it had regualar insurance, the blower scoop and rear end wouldn't pass. I have antique insurance. Sure, I can't drive during the week (unless to a show or the mechanic) but I do anyways because, lets face it, not all weekends are picture perfect and some days during the week are. If I were stopped, I have plenty of buddies that own shops that I could say I'm going to and even if the cop called, they would play along.
Edit: Oh and as far as seeing over the scoop: I usually stay in the right lane because cars like to hide in the blind spot the scoop makes so its hard to change lanes. And if I'm going around a wide corner to the right, you have to either look over the scoop or under the scoop between the scoop and carb. Pain in the ***? Yes. Totally worth is? Hell yes!
I don't know if your comment was towards me, but I don't have the original gauges in the car. The previous owner put in all AutoMeter Ultra-lite gauges:
