I have an 81 which came with the lame government mandated 85 mph speedo. Someone saved me the trouble of converting to a real speedometer along the way. When I look at pictures of other vettes I see 160 being the top but mine looks like a factory piece and is 175. Just wondering did any come with a factory 175 or is this aftermarket. No big deal but made me curious.
Good question I have seen them for sale on eBay claiming to be nos
Clubby is right though I once saw a c3 when I was 7-8 years old try to do over 120mph on a cross country trip with family guy flew buy us like a rocket an about a mile up he came over a hill and it was STUPID windy the car flipped on it it's tops and just skid for a while several people stopped but we couldn't don't know if that guy lived or not but the cars are not to friendly at high speeds wind gets into the wheel wells an under the fenders the c3s literaly will fly for about 2 seconds before crashing

Your 175 unit is probably custom. I re-did an 85 mph speedo for another car to 140, and had a speedometer shop calibrate it. The mention of coming close to 175 in an 81' obviously isn't gonna happen, unless you've got one heck of an engine, and taller gearing. My C6 ZO6 will do over that, but not with me driving it. Sometimes hit near 150 at road track events, and plenty fast for me.
I think I am going to not like being a gal on a guy-type forum Poor hubby has to do the speed limit while I am in the car, but going to work on the back roads I do 70+..... But high speeds are for the young and daring,
My 1980 Vette has the gov't friendly 85 mph speedometer, way enough for me....
Mid 79 through 81 had the 85 mph speedo, if I remember correctly. I found an early 79 speedo and tach on the forum that was a 140 mph and had the L-82 tach. They look and work great in my '80 with new bulbs and a general cleanup.

Don't recall ever seeing one that goes to 175 before. Pics???
My '78 SA (originally an L82) came with 140 speedo, but I changed it out ages ago to one from Corvette Clinic, just like that seen below. (Sorry, before anyone asks, the one pictured has already been sold.) Pippo's somewhat favors the one carried by Eckler's, no?
...and, yes, there are a few C3's around which can definitely peg that needle.

Ding ding ding. This is exactly what mine looks like with the exception of it is a 175 mph speedo. It seems I may not have been clear with my original post. I was only interested in whether my speedo was a factory piece out of another model, not driving my car at 175mph. While I don't intend on going that fast, the 85 mph speedo was not enough.

Maybe CC did yours too. In any event, it would certainly be an aftermarket piece.
My remark about high speed sharks was intended for the benefit of non-believers among us.
