I have a red 1978 Corvette and I am trying to find some touch up paint for it. The local Autozone said they can get some, but they need to know what the color code is. How do I find this out? Is the color code in the VIN number? Or is it stamped somewhere on the car? How can I found out what the color code is? Thanks for any help.
The color code for red in 78 was"72" if it is the original paint. That will not be enough for a painter or paint supplier. You need to know the formula for the paint. If you do a search here on the forum, I think the paint formula codes are listed.
You can also by tough up paint from most of the aftermarket suppliers.
OK. Thanks. But what if I just want to buy a can of touch up paint from a place like Autozone. They said I needed the color code so that they know what color I needed.

Isn't there a paint/trim plate riveted to your A-pillar base by the driver's door hinge?

If you really want it to match...I would break off a chuck of red or just take the t-top to an automotive paint shop. they can computer match it and mix you up a quart tho probably more pricey than autozone's one color fits three dozen automotive paint schemes.
Having said all that, I have a 1978 Chevrolet color chart and it reads 2973 for the color red along with the 72 code. Not sure if that helps.

I did notice that there was two shades of red that year. I didn't know to look there on the door. I looked on the door where the latch is. I'll check it out. Thanks
OK. I found it. It says 72L paint. I guess I never noticed that tag before. I've only had the car since 1991............ So, thanks everyone for the help. I appreciate it.
Just go on-line and order whatever you want: touchup bottle/brush, spray paint, etc. etc. If the paint on your car is 'original' or a repaint mixed to the original color, it should be a very good match.
