About 2 years ago I pulled the hood release and after about 4 inches of pull realized what happened, the cable snapped. I purchased a new cable and paid a fair amount of money to a mechanic to replace this cable. Most of the cost was for him to get the hood open with no working cable.
This morning I pulled the hood release and it snapped with like 2 inches of cable attached to it.
Clearly the cable is rusted and warn so this is not a new cable that I supplied.
The mechanic is now retired and nowhere to be found.
The left side latch of the hood opened but not the passenger. I can almost get a hand down there but not without a lot of painful contortions.
Any suggestions on how can I open this hood without a cable?
What year?
I have two small port holes on each side of mine, by the wipers, that you can put in a small screwdriver and hit the latch that would normally be pulled by the cable.
Good luck.
Hi TO,
Can you reach the cable that runs from the left-side latch to right-side latch and pull IT to release the right-side latch? That cable is what works the latch under normal conditions.
You might even be able to pull the cable with a hook.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

1981 - It's in his profile. Original poster, there is a plastic plug leading from the wiper trough to through the firewall on both sides. Since the driver's side popped you don't need to worry about that side. On the passenger side then you have to manually release it. Just reach under the end of the hood, feel for the plug and pull it out. You can feed a screw driver through the hole and trip the latch. It might take some trial and error since you can't put eyes on what you are doing.
