My '79 came with 225/70-15's on it they still have great tread but, I am beginning to suspect they are just garbage tires. I have had my front end checked out and it is fine had a 4 wheel laser alignment done, new shocks and while the ride has improved the handling seems subpar. Does anyone have any experience with these tires and if you replaced them how much did (if any) improve handling? Also looking for some recommendations on a replacement set that won't break the bank which is getting kind of low
I live in North Florida so a all season ie snow tire is not a necessity.
Do a search by tire brand . . .most of the discussion is BFG's or Firestone Indy's.
Yeah I did that first and you are right about most of the discussion being about BFG's and Firestones was just hoping someone had any experiece with these.
They came standard on my 2002 Trans Am ram air and they were fine. A good wet and dry tire. Not a noisy tire either. I just put them on my sons Cavalier. A good tire for bang for the buck. Not available in white letter.
I have been busy lately and spending a lot of money on a %th wheeel camper we bought. I haven't been driving my '79 a lot. Last Sunday we took it out for a 2 hour drive and these tires are just like I remembered them. Should I go with what the factory size was 225/70 15r or should I be looking at other sizes. Also still looking for some recommendations on a reasonably priced tire that performs decently.
255/60 r15 were the optional stock tire size for 78 and newer c3s. They're a bit wider than the 70 series tires. My 79 came from the factory with 70 series tires but is currently running four 255/60r15 white letter BFGs with no issues. The tires canbe ordered from Coker for about $130 each. Hope this helps!
The RSA's are a decent all season, medium performance tire, but as mentioned, probably getting pretty old/hard. For now, you may want to try some race car brush on tire traction treatment, like Formula V or Track Bite. Places like Pegasus racing or Behnren't carry these.
I have driven lots of cars with the RSA's on them as all of the cars I drive for work have them. They are a pretty decent tire (that being said, there are much better tires out there), but pretty good none the less. We drive the **** out of our cars at work, so they don't last very long. I am always amazed how well they do in the snow, for a performance all season. Not that you will be driving in the snow much.
IMO, anything with a 70 aspect ratio is not going to handle great, by today's standards. If you do a search for that size on Tire Rack, for example, you will get mostly truck tires. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...70&diameter=15
How old are they? Even a good tire will turn into a hockey puck eventually.
I'm guessing my 7 year old tires are due for replacement? Besides being old, they don't have much tread left.
I've got BFG 255/60/15's on my 79 and I really like the looks of them. Don't know how much new ones are gonna run, but I will probably go with same brand and size.
