My son was replacing Alternator belt on 1980 corvette, when connecting wires +,- he forgot that battery was still live and had live short. Now cars starter will not work not even a click.
Likely blew out a fusible link in the system. You will have to find which one (or more) is fried and replace it with another fusible link of the correct size. DO NOT replace a fusible link with just 'normal' wire. You would be eliminating one of the 'safety systems' in the car.
What your son had happen is exactly why fusible links are there. If they were not, your car may have caught fire and burned to a crisp. As is, you are only out one fusible link. Fix it correctly.
Found that the ground to the battery was bad, not making a good connection, car starts, running. We were lucky this time, will make sure that it does not happen again.
