Hey guys,
I know this has possibly been discussed before but here is my situation.
I am wanting to know if I buy 1972 License plates off EBay for my 72 Vette will these be legal here in Texas?
I did a quick check on My.Plates.com and the plates on ebay were available at My Plates..sorry for the dumb question..Im an Aussie still getting used to different rules culture etc
Hope i make sense
My vette arrives tomorrow http://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Texas-L...item3cc4d69520
Those are a very nice set of vintage Texas plates. I say if you can register your '72 with those plates - GO FOR IT. Would look cool. Good luck with your new '72. It arrives tomorrow??? I bet you will not be able to sleep tonight.
I picked up this old Illinois plate off of E-bay awhile back for $10.00. My car was originally sold new in Chicago, Illinois (although I am still trying to find out the dealership - #023). The plate kind of had my name written all over it - BK3 and my car is a '68.

Call any local BMV branch. They will tell you if there is a system for using 'vintage' plates. If there is, you may have to register the car specifically as an "antique". Just be aware that there are restrictions that go along with that "antique" definition.
If I remember correctly from my research when getting antique plates, as long ad they original plates from the year, you can register them. ie, no weird plate that says 68, but if they are good shape originals, fill out paper work and good to go. it was two years ago though that I was doing my research so law could change and I could be wrong. Best bet, call txdot or read up on texas website.
In Texas you can put YOM (Year of Manufacture - Texas plates from the model year of your car) plates on your car, but the law has changed.
In Texas you can register your car as either a classic, or an antique. You used to be able to use YOM plates on either classic or antique registered cars, the law has been changed, and you can only register YOM plates on cars registered as antiques. If you already have a car registered as a classic, with YOM plates, you are grandfathered in - I have my 72 registered as a classic with YOM plates, so i'm grandfathered in. As long as I stay in Texas I can keep my YOM plates on my car.
If you decided to run YOM plates, you have to run both front and back if the year they are from required front plates - 72 did.
I didn't register mine as an antique because I didn't want any restrictions.
I would love to do this for mine. But Fla, says it has to be a Fla, tag. Not another state tag.
That is the same procedure here in Maryland... The Vintage plate HAS to be a Maryland Plate... and you also have to carry the correct current tag inside the vehicle (but not displayed)
Go to your local tax office and tell them what you want to do. They have a simple form to fill out where you indicate the current plates and what you want to use.
I did my 72 Vette 10 years ago and I had to take them to the local TX-DOT office so they could look at them and make sure they were legible, reflective, etc. Then they gave me a form to take to the tax office.
I just registered a 69 Camaro and the tax office didn't require me to go to the DOT office. Just filled out the form. They didn't even ask to see the plates at the tax office.
I don't know how you have your Vette registered. I have mine registered so I don't have to get annual inspection. Something like $50 for 5 years for the registration. They give you a little sticker to put on your plate (or you might get by with keeping it in the glove box). It can't be a daily driver. I think you are only supposed to drive it for parades, club events, etc. As long as you aren't doing something really stupid and get pulled over, I doubt the LEO would harrass you. I can always claim I am a parade of 1 or a car club with 2 members (me and my wife).
Nice clean plates. I bought my 72 plates for $25 10 years ago.
I paid $125 for the 69 plates. Supply and demand.
But they were NOS. Still had the paper divider between the plates with advertisement for the prison rodeo.
