Short of driving it off a cliff, why not stop fiddle-fuching around and get it to a real skilled mechanic with the proper diagnostic tools??? Personally, I'd choose one who DID NOT consume a 12 pack while doing the work. But hey, that's just me!

75_stinger,

I'm not sure if you solved your issue yet, but I FINALLY figured mine.

So simple. But man, what a pain to figure. After replacing the starter relay, cleaning the battery ground to the frame connection, and tracing a bajillion wires for shorts, breaks, and fries, it comes down to the Neutral Safety Switch being bad...

I shoulda known it, because I had no reverse lights. When the switch didn't have a good connection, maybe from getting bumped or jostled in the spaghetti under the shifter plate, it wouldn't start. That little beauty wasn't being tempermental, she was doing what she was supposed to do: Not starting when the switch wasn't properly engaged.

You've got the same year and the same symptoms, perhaps looking into that will help. It's right behind the shifter. If you do a search here, I'm sure you'll find more info on fixes/troubleshooting, maybe a pic or two.

I just ordered a new one. Hopefully that means problem solved.

There are a few reasons I can't bring it to the shop, I am getting married in August and I have blown through my $15,000 budget I had for the car so no more shop time until after the wedding.

I have spent a majority of the last 12 years living overseas and deployed so I have sold off all of my tools and forgot how to work on my own car so I am trying to re-learn the ins and outs of fixing a classic car.

Finally, I don't see how drinking some beer with a friend who is helping me out to install sound deadening material is an issue, it was nice weather and we enjoyed ourselves, the job got finished and I am happy with the results.
