I am in the removal stage of my 71 LT1, to do a body off, I noticed in the enginge compartment the steering column has a lever on it, as would a car with a column shift automatic, even the bracket has a hole for a cable, or a rod for linkage. What is this for ?, I am clueless, thanks, Ron
There should be a cable there attached to the shift linkage. It will move that lever up when you put it in park (if automatic) or reverse I think (if standard) so that you can remove the key.

There should be a cable running to the transmission, reverse lever. You can't take the key out until the car is put in reverse. Once the key is out you can't take it out of reverse. Some people remove this cable and tie the arm up. The cables sometimes freeze up if they're not used often or lubed.
