Default Water Pump

On the top of my water pump there is a plug, I am wondering if there is a tempature gauge that I could screw in there instead of that ugly plug, this is on my 81.

That is where a temp sender goes, rather than in the head or intake. If it's the plug with the square lug, you can replace it with a plug that takes an allen wrench to install for a 'smoother' look.

I've never seen a temp gauge probe (electric or mechanical) in the water pump. Always in either the head or intake. Some cars used the plug in the pump for the heater/defroster hose. Unless it a BB then the bypass hose to the intake goes there.

It won't do much good to put a sender there.
You would get a reading of cool coolant mixed with hotter engine bypass water.
Nothing meaningful.

Thanks guys, I was just looking for something to fill in the ugly void. I figured what the heck, I got a plug there maybe I could put some kind of gauge there to make it look a little better in that area.

How about a pressure guage instead? It won't really tell you anything(or will a temp guage) but if you are just looking to do something different, almost anything with a NPT thread can be bushed and screwed in there.
