What MPG should I be getting with my 81 original engine?
Right now I'm getting 14 mpg. I've changed the fuel filter, new plugs and wires, new distributor cap, rotor and ignition module. Checked the timing and it's okay. 2:86 rear with 3 speed automatic.
Is it time to replace or beef up the engine (185 hp for 81)?
You haven't mentioned whether you have the stock engine in the car...or, if it is the stock engine, whether the ECM/etc. are still operating on the car [or not]...or whether it has a non-stock engine...BB/SS....what transmission....overdrive?
So, with what we know from your post: something between 14 and 22 mpg.
Now, a full stock '81 car/engine/transmission that is still operating properly should be getting something like 17-18 mpg on the highway. Some '81s might do a little better than that.
