I took my 72 back to the painter because it had developed cracks near the door handle. They were on the front inside of it and curved to around the handle. He told me the gel coat was "breaking down" because of the car's age and the door should be stripped, a new gel coat applied and repainted. I've never heard of anything like that. Has anyone here?
Only one part of what the painter said is correct: The door needs to be stripped. That will tell you the real reason for the problem. There's some form of bad repair in that area. It needs to be isolated, removed and repaired correctly.
This is one of the many reasons why these forums are so awesome. Helping a fellow Vette owner out and keeping them from being taken by a crook, or at the very least someone who is not knowledgeable about Corvettes and will charge someone to prove that fact.
