Default Rim reconditioning question.

1980 and it has the original rims , I have polished them and they shine nicely , BUT the inner areas that are black are faded and really do not clean up as nice as I would like.

has anyone painted that area ? How did you do it ? spray ? Brush ? And what paint did you use ?

Here is a pic of the car and the rims I am talking about

Those areas were painted by the manufacturer. I used Krylon semi-flat black on mine - old style 5-ball formula - shot from the backside. You can also mask the fronts and shoot from the front if you want.

Mike is bang on. Semi-gloss Krylon is the ticket. I just purchased a set of original rims off of a '79 for my '80 resto. I'm going to strip the paint first, wash the wheels then spray them from the inside (no paint in the center of the rims). After that, lots of polishing following the advice of the guys on this forum.

Ahhh ok what you are doing is taping over the hole on the front ? Then spraying from back side ?

I did not mask the fronts when spraying from the back side. I suppose you could.

I'm taking the advice of the "many" on this site. I'll spray the black from the backside, then begin the polishing process with the wet sanding of the rims. Any overspray - if there's any - will be removed at that time.

By the way, my '79 rims have the centers painted black. On the '80 these same centers were unpainted. So this paint comes off before the polishing starts.

Thanks easy mike I actually had polished the rims a few weeks ago so I did mask the front by taping over each oval and then painted them from the back as it appears that is how they where painted to begin with.

Correct and black on earlier model years.

...On the '80 these same centers were unpainted...
Also correct and unpainted on the 81s and 82s. The 80-82 wheels are also supposed to be lighter than the earlier wheels.

Well sure.... all that paint had to weigh something.

True, but not eight pounds.
http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/...feature25.html

"Later wheels, from 1980-'82, looked identical but were 8 pounds lighter each (eliminating 32 pounds of unsprung weight is no mean feat), and were polished and clearcoated."

So....
This begs the question... Are all the aftermarket aluminum rims sold now 8 pounds lighter too? Regardless of year?

I don't have a clue; not sure who makes the repros (Western, I believe). My four are original K-H.
