lower radiator hose question

lower radiator hose question
I was going to put on new radiator hoses. Took lower one off and then stepped on it and bent a metal spring inside which is beyond repair. The new hose doesn't have a spring. Should the lower hose have this spring or not?

It either needs a spring or it must be designed not to collapse under suction (the lower hose is the suction side of the water pump). Most of the corrugated hoses will not collapse. I would tell you to ask the clerk at the store where you bought it, but they will likely have no idea what the part is, let alone if it can hold up to suction.

7T1 Vette---thanks for the reply. And it's good to know there is at least one other person out there as cynical as I am about trying to find knowledgeable people (about our cars) working in the parts stores!

Why do you say "beyond repair"? Unless the spring is corroded causing it to have broken into pieces, I would think it fairly easy to force back into shape enough to be able to remove it from the old hose and work it down into the new.
