Just signed up here. Just bough my second Stingray.
My first was a 72, Pewter, matching numbers, auto. I had to sell that one back in the 90s when circumstances remedied it necessary.
Just bought my second. 1968 Bronze convertible, matching Muncie 4 speed. It does not have the original engine. Someone decided to stick a 454 in it alone the way. It appears to be a big block car by the added sway bars and the red line on the tach.
I would like to put this vette back to factory specs. Is there any way I can find out which 427 this vette carried? It has a 427, 390hp air filer cover, but those are easy enough to come by. I would greatly appreciate any direction and advice.
welcome if you need any kind of help this is the best place to start. i have a sbc 79 so i cannot help much here. i am sure someone who can will chime in shortly. congrats on your purchase bronze 68 is a beautiful car. you should post a picture of your vert.
do you have a photo bucket account? if not get one posting pics with my questions and getting pics back in answers as a perspective has made my rebuild much much easier and more enjoyable
Thanks Guys! I must tell you I am excited about getting back behind the wheel of a C3.
I sold my 72 in 1997 and have hated myself since.
I welcome any advice as to how or where I should search or look to see what was the factory correct engine for this car. I read that the St. Louis records are non-existent. Does anyone have a recommendation?
Hi Jerry,
I'm not too familiar with bb cars but I'll start the discussion by suggesting that the tank sticker will have the engine information on it.
Might the sticker still be there?
Also, the tach red-line is an indication... the 390 & 400 hp engines had a 5600 red-line while the 435 & 430 hp engines had a 6500 red-line. But the tach could have been changed at some point.
I think I'd first try to establish that it was in fact a bb car. Since the original engine is gone, maybe what it WAS isn't as important as what it IS, which looks to be a very nice 68!
Good Luck with your new old toy!
Regards,
Alan
I agree with Alan. You may find hints on the car about what its pedigree might have been, but you will want some type of factory documentation to prove it. Did any documentation come with the car? Can you contact the seller and see if he/she might have some of the paperwork?
