Default *** '68 Jack question ***

Just doing some research in regards to OEM '68 jacks and have a few questions. What are the things to look for??? I know the '67 - '68 had a narrow base. Anything else??? I have seen a few examples which had stamped date codes of month/year and others with year/month. Is that correct??? Also how does one determine a correct OEM handle??? What does one look for??? Thanks in advance. BK3

Ill try and bump this back up near the top in hopes for a response soon, as I am in need of a jack for my '68 as well and would like to know what to look for.

Hi bk,
I'm not real clear on the differences and just when they changed.
I believe the 68 base was about 1" narrower than the 69 base, but the body of the jack was narrower too. Again about 1" difference. The 'arms' on the 68 jack are quite close to the 'screw rod' compared to the 69.
I'm not at all clear if the 68 jack is similar to the 67 jack or not.

I'm equally unsure about the handle. I've heard talk about the number of holes in the handle... my 71 original has 3. Also the end of the handle seems to vary. My original is cut 'square on the end but my reproduction is radiused. I've seen pictures of original handles that are both ways.

So....?
Sorry I can't help.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan for the info Helps out a lot. I also believe that the top part of the jack has the letter "A" stamped into it (?). I am also confused about the configuration of a correct handle as you have indicated. Also the correct order of the date code - month/year or year/month ??? Thanks again for the help. BK3

Hi BK3,
As usual my knowledge is real thin once it goes any direction from 71, sb, 4-speed, cars.
I generally believe the NCRS Technical Information Manual.
The 68-69 Manual mentions the large A on the pad that contacts the chassis, and also indicates the year # be stamped first, and then the month letter.
Regards,
Alan

Many thanks, Steve. I have seen jacks with month/year. Is that considered correct in the NCRS circles???

In the 68-69 NCRS Judging Guide, it shows a picture almost identical to this, showing "9 M." The text says "the jack should have a date code on the outer arm near the cranking end. The code is a number for the year, followed by a letter for the month. Some have been seen with no date codes."

This is for 68-69; I cant speak to possible exceptions or changes in other years.

Other details re: the jack per NCRS:

-68 & early 69 base measured 6 x 4 inches
-later 68 base was larger, 9 x 5
-painted low quality gloss black
-all jacks had letter A for Ausco stamped on raised portion of the pad that contacts the chassis
-jack handle has a rubber anti-rattle boot on the hex end.
-held in place by spring and hook

Blair,
My photobucket is have an unknown issue. I emailed you comparison pictures of my "original to my cars" 68 and 69 jacks. Please note the difference in size as well as construction, especially on the ends. Feel free to post the pictures. The jack handle is off the 68 and I believe is the same for 69. I don't have my original 69 handle. Thanks, john

PS, not to HIJACK but if anyone needs a jack off a 71 I have one that needs to go. Friend sold the car (rush divorce sale) here on the forum. Buyer EBAYED it after 1 month......I have his jack.

Thanks AJ for the detailed pics. Quite the difference between the '68 and '69 and on jacks. Now I know....

Just curious - what is the date code on your '68 jack??? Looks like a nice clean example.

P.S. - I will take the dated Wittek clamps - I will PM you.

Thanks again. BK3

Hi Blair, dated 8D or April 68 for my late May 68 car. I did repaint the bolt though, in cast color, and am not sure that is correct. It was dirty and appeared to have been that way originally but I am not certain.

As I mentioned, I bought the car at age 17 and never needed (or cared to look) for the jack. After USMC and college I stored the car and only found it during the resto in 2004. It was (where it was supposed to be) under the tray.
