I know the standard casting number for GM water pump's is 3782608.
Above that number on my pump is "GM 26"
I am trying to determine if this pump is original or if it is a replacement by the original owner.
Does anyone know what the number alongside the "GM" letters stands for?
Hi V_N,
The number after the GM refers to the 'pattern number' that was used to make the casting.
You'll see it on other cast parts like exhaust manifolds too.

Alan

If the "26" is pattern related, then they used multiple patterns to build (what looks like) identical water pumps. I'm not surprised, because I've seen numerous other numbers on other water pumps that look identical to mine - some begin with single digits.
Does that mean my water pump is a replacement? and the original pump would have had a lower pattern number?
I can't find a date on my W.P. casting, so how do I know what number matches when my vette was built (1970 L46 that was manufactured in July of 1970). Or am I getting too picky??
Hi V_N,
Yes, you're right, there were multiple patterns.
I believe your 70 water pump should have 3782608 as the casting number... we'll worry about that before the date. Is that the #?

Alan

That is the correct casting number. There is another number on the opposite side of the pump shaft, but it is very worn - looks like D28? (unable to make out the last digit).
Based on the C3registry.com, my vette was assembled on July 16, 1970.
I need to replace my pump - broke it in the process of installing the new internal components (bearing and seal).
Thanks for the help,
Dan
