I just returned from a week long road trip with my daughter in the Vette. Although the car is in great shape I was really worried about breaking down a lonngggg way from home and being stuck with some catastrophic failure, but, after 3110 klms (thats about 1920 miles) I can report that the car performed perfectly, never missed a beat and we had a wonderful time in our country's Capitol city of Canberra. A new aluminum radiator kept her cool, even at 70mph for 4 hours at a time and newly rebuilt front and rear suspension kept her on the road well even though we hit pot holes the size of of Texas. My daughters only complaint was from floor heat as a passenger. The only minor issues were two broken door pulls (had to happen sooner or later) and a fuel starvation problem under hard acceleration which didnt concern me. Thank goodness my car has the factory cruise control which kept my left ankle from suffering too much. Oh and on one leg of the journey I managed 20mpg (imperial gallon not US) at highway speed, that's the best I have ever had in this car, in modern terms thats about 14 litres to the 100k. I am so pleased with the car and more importantly, my efforts in maintaining it, no one but me works on this car.
Glad things went well with the trip and the car. Next time, you should consider installing an overdrive transmission in your car. The improvement in engine speed (2000 rpm vs. 3000 rpm), car noise, driver/passenger comfort, and mileage (about 25%+ improvement) will make it even more enjoyable.
Cars are a lot like us.... If you keep us maintained well, being "old" isn't such a big deal.
Vette's Down Under.... NICE!!! I spent three weeks in Queensland visiting my brother-in-law. Beautiful country, hot weather, wide open roads. Custom made for the Corvette. But you guys drive on the wrong side of the road.
i just did 2400 K this past week-end ...Toronto, Canada to Lawrenceberg, Ky
i had to tighten up the power steering reservoir & the alternator bracket after getting to Lawrenceberg , Ky because of the terrible condition of I75 going thru Michigan
going home, from Toledo, Ohio to Detroit, Michigan , i was almost in tears...i will never take the Batmobile into Michigan again
Hi A79,
VERY nice tale!
I would think there would have been a couple of things worthy of a picture or two?!?
In my mind I have a snap shot of your daughter's hot feet poked out of the window!
Regards,
Alan
