Default Window Tint Ticket

Does anyone know or have heard of anyone getting a ticket for window tint being to dark. Alabama law states that 32% is as dark as I can go. It got me wondering if anyone has actually received a ticket for this. I have never heard of anyone getting one.

absolutely! I have received a warning before and then once was written a ticket but that went away quickly when I produced a RX for the window tint due to bright light exposure causing/ triggering a migraine headache. I have heard that some are police have the little photo testers to check the darkness of the tint.

I don't however think it is a primary law where they can pull you over solely based on the suspicion of your windows being tinted too dark but they could always just say you had a tail light out and pull you over for that.

In NC they check it at the annual state inspection. If it too dark you don't pass.

North of the border in Canada we are also have a yearly vehicle inspection program in Nova Scotia. They won't give you a pass if you have tint. They'll pull it off - then give you a pass. And my experience was that the guy who pulled it off and gave me the pass, offerred to retint it for me if I wanted - for a price - as he threw my old tinting in the garbage...all just kind of makes you wonder... By the way - I said no thanks.

I'm a police officer in Penna.
70 % light emission is required.
We have a tint meter.
So your allowed 30% light restricting tint.
Most factory tint is legal.
Tint maybe darker behind drivers perifereal
but that wouldn't apply for a c-3.
Dark tinting is considered a secondary violation
but nothing says we can't stop you for it and what ever
else we find (oh is that marijuana) is just a bonus.
Hope this helped

If I were in law enforcement I sure would not want to walk up to a window I could not see in. Never can tell what awaits on the otherwise. This is one law I agree with.

Happens out here in the desert periodically but is rarely probable cause to stop - - usually the by-product of a mouthy driver that just won't shut up on a speed cite . . .

1. You need to be able to actually SEE out of the car...particularly at dusk/dawn/night;
2. Police don't like cars that can hide the fact they are getting ready for a 'drive-by shootout'; (or that a pistol is aimed at them from inside the car as they are walking up to it)
3. In AZ...where the sun is extremely hot and bright...70% visibility is still the requirement.

Looking doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good thing.

Me too in Columbus, GA. Cops pulled out some little gadget and measured the darkness (5% limo tint). I think mine was a little more than 70 bucks though. It was a while ago (early 90's) so cant remember completely. I actually had a hard time seeing at night but that didn't matter because I was younger and invincible. Had to maintain those stylish cool points ya know.

I got a ticket and I have 30% on my GTO and I live in PA, I even asked the officer to use the meter. It came up 31% and he wrote me up. My brother inlaw is a county detective and he told me it was ridiculous and to go to court. I didn't bother but I guess it just depends upon how your day went, right? I dont know.

Sort of a gray area, anyways no tint is going on my Vette.

I would have gone to court. If you had showed up, the guy who wrote the ticket would have "conveniently" left the courtroom....or else he would be badly embarrassed by the judge when he threw out the ticket.

We call that a chicken **** pinch.
I have a feelin the operator gave the officer a
lil mouth.
You usually talk yourself into the ticket.
Should have gone to local DC if you were indeed in the right??
31% light emiting is still too dark.
Meter should show 70% and up.
I think you it backwards

I remember in the mid 80s I had real blue tint, it was as blue as the car that was pretty cool it came from the national car parts chain "Nationwise".
Now I like just a nice tint to stop some of the heat so the air in the family car works better.

I may have upset him a little bit, but he was sort of D***. When he pulled me over he didn't even state the reason he did. I politely asked him why he pulled me over, and he did not respond he just demanded my documents. I have been driving for 39 years with barely a speeding ticket as I am a pretty conservative driver. So for this reason I just was perplexed by the stop I wasn't speeding, did not blow any red lights so I was curious, I had no Idea the tint was illegal. I know, I know ignorance of the law is no excuse blah, blah, blah. He held me there for a half an hour, I mean I understand why they may have pulled me over "Red GTO, tinted windows, and a bit of a rumble in the SLP exhaust" he probably thought I was some kid out partying it up as it was 11:30 at night. So it may have appeared suspicious. I get that but don't be a jerk when your asked the reason for the stop.

Oh and Yes I had it backwards, it was registering 69% VLT. It was an honorable Hilltown Officer known for handing out "tint" tickets. I do have the utmost respect for the dedicated and honorable officers out there, though in this case it is my opinion he was not and is not in that category.
On a side note my entire family is in law enforcement and honestly I just couldn't be bothered by missing work versus paying a $90 ticket for tint on a car I occasionally drive in the summer to shows and events. Mainly I got it tinted to help protect the interior. As I previously stated, no tint is going on the Vette.

That's all I'm going to say.

The cops like to give tint tickets up here in MA, but I've never heard of anybody getting pulled over for it, it's more of a "Oh, a wiseass, huh? Well guess what?" kind of a thing.

Take it easy when being judgemental about cops, they have a tough, thankless job. They are not all jerks, it's just that 95% that make the other 5% look bad!

Keep the shiny side up!

Here in Ma.... My son knowing, tinted the windows in his STI over the limit. That day after work got stopped for the windows. 125.00 for the tint /less than one day on and had to be stripped off. Another 125.00 for legal limit tint. Good lesson learned.

I know we beat the hell out of the topic, but in closing let me say;
I do not bother classic cars for minor infractions.
I believe you have too much invested to act stupid with it.
A classic or antique car registered as such in PA on a Sunday drive
is not going to get a tickect from me for fender flares, tint, hood scoop height viol. etc...
If my lights are on behind you its probably because I want to look at your cool car
I on the other hand will say this: If you partake in border line behavior
don't have tinting on the windows. It is my invitation inside your car.
So if you periodically drink and drive don't take the car with the illegal windows that night.
If you like to drive around and smoke a joint or do a lil coke on the console again don't drive around with the illegal window tint.
Take the Hyundai!!!
I only catch the really stupid people to be honest with you.
And that's after 21 years on the job.
I rest my case.

Also I would like to Thank Men Like yourself "Marshall" for doing the job you do. I know it's sometimes is not an easy job to do. I am Ex-Navy and continue to support them on a daily basis.

Thank you all!
