Default vacuum cannister .

Hi ,
Not sure if we are talking the same model , but i have just cut off the top with a can opener on my 80 model .

The small head with the ports on was just turning around on the can top and leaking so i didnt have any headlight operation .

I removed the top punched a new lid on my cnc machine , but you could cut one by hand . Fitted new pipe for the rubber hoses to connect to and silver soldered them in place , tig welded the new top on and painted . All back working fine , but i think the cans for the 80 models are still available from some of the major vendors .

Same principal; different kind of reserve tank. 80-82 are essentially coffee cans. 68-72 are genuine metal tanks.

Back when I repaired mine I tried some type of epoxy and it didnt work. As internal vacumn varies the tank flexes, whatever epoxy I used was stiffer than the tank and ended up cracking.

Mike, the 68,69 wiper actuator can does not have a diaphram in it. It is a stamped steel piston with a flat, round rubber seal in it, and the attached rod, of course. Many years ago, I repaired mine by using a "razor saw" to cut the can by the flat end. I had a very hard time trying to duplicate the seal out of "diaphram rubber". I then soldered the can back on to the flat end. It worked but leaked through slightly. I do not think it is worth all of the work to do. My original seal was made of regular rubber and it folded over in one spot. That is why it no longer worked. Lou.

I agree: piston is correct.

I just bypass the tank since it eventually causes problems from leaking. Never really understood it's purpose and havent needed it in 11 years now. My.02

Hi,
I believe the purpose of the tank was to have a reserve supply of vacuum so that the headlight doors and wiper door could be opened and closed at least once without the engine running.
Regards,
Alan
