Well that’s one way to do it I’ve never tried, but it looks great.

I make the plates (found here) for the switches that most major vendors carry and this is no easy job. For those that try this without cutting the jamb panel it requires even more patience and trickery.

To install the plates without cutting you have to feed a stiff wire through the original hole, slide the plate on the wire and then let it slide in place. Once I place you must hold it and then get a rivet in there. We use a tiny 90 degree pick to hold it in place while we use a pop rivet to secure it.

Not easy but very do-able. And… one last note: Make sure to attach your ground wire to the plate.

Thanks Ernie... I contemplated getting the new ones and installing, but did a quick cost/benefit analysis with my sanity and decided my nerves didn't need a day of trying to get these into place (kind of looked like a parking brake job with all parts on the car)... I like the clean look a little better anyway... Sure I'll regret this as soon as I kill a battery or two down the road!!!!

as for the stiff wire tip I think I will also tie a piece of dental floss to the plate (thru one of the rivet holes) and run that out thru the access door in case the plate decides to slip and fall into the black hole.

Ed-

Without modifying your brackets to look like mine you won't get those in there. They must have the relief to fit through the hole. In the picture I posted below, the one on the left is an original plate. The third hole is for the ground wire and the screw was a slotted head screw if you can believe that...

Now.. if you look at the side that is cut off on mine, and you want to make the installation easier.. do it on both sides. You'll find the bracket will fit through the hole way easier with both sides cut. If you do this solder the ground wire on the plate, you won't have room for another hole. You do that, feed a wire though there and that bracket will slide right in place.

Willcox's plate looks great! I think I saw that it was introduced after I did my repair. IF I was doing it again, I'd buy/use the Willcox part.

BTW, after a couple seasons now, my repair is holding as it did when I made it.

Thanks for this Ed T and others.
I've been wondering how to make this repair.
Cheers and SEASON GREETINGS.
