if you drill it so its the same as the left side, about 1/2" behind the door skin is a metal strip, with your window rolled up, drill a small hole and then just use a couple of sheet metal screws
I couldnt get the new well nuts to stop the mirrors from wobbling and I didnt want to drill the metal support, so I used metal hollow door anchors, and I used locktite on the screws, nomo wobbles
I have a right-hand mirror. It is much better than having NO right-hand mirror. But, I am absolutely SHOCKED that no vendor sells an original-looking early 70's right-side unit with a convex mirror so that it can actually see much!
Totally agree. I discovered this too. I love to use my mirrors, but found a non-convex mirror on the passenger side to be almost useless
So who sells good quality mirrors these days. The ones I got from Paragon 8 or so years ago never did stay snug and flog all over the place. Also, I think they went to the larger mirror in 74, so earlier cars cold switch over to those relatively easy.
OK, I got the RH Mirror from Mid America. It came with the (well nuts) which I have never seen before and find hard to belive that the mirror is not just going to fall off after drilling 3/8" holes in the door. So after the fact I do this search on the subject and find mixed results on their use along with a couple of alternate mounting ideas.
This has me wondering if I should use the well nuts or just take it to a body shop and have them deal with it.

For those who have done this what do you suggest?
I did it over 4 years ago and it hasn't fallen off yet.
agreed....I was thinking more along the lines of if you were going to use something other than the stock mirror, and replace the existing mirror(s), then you would want to know how far apart the holes are when looking for suitable replacements so as to verify that it would fit in the factory holes
I put the Rally Sport mirrors on about 35 years ago, After new paint job went back to chrome ones.
On the right hand side i drilled and tapped a 1/8 thick plate and bolted it to the door frame. The plate has the mounting holes for the mirror.
Has held up well.
Are you really going to drill your door based on some dimension submitted by a post on this Forum? Better wait till you buy the mirror...
no, not at all....I have no intention of drilling any holes at all....I just wanted to know how far the stock holes are so that I can find a mirror that reuses the stock holes
