Default 71 ls6

I met a gentlemen today with an all original 1971 LS6 and even more interesting to me was that it had an automatic (Turbo 400) transmission.

I found listed that only 188 LS6 engines were ordered in 1971.

I'm curious if anyone has an idea of how many of the 188 were automatics?

Thank you,
Rabvet

There is no way of knowing. GM did not keep records of options combinations.

In 1971, I would guess that somewhat less than half of those LS6 cars got automatics. Most 'performance' folks bought the 4-speeds; but many folks just bought the car as a "status symbol" and didn't really want to shift gears.

And with the THM-400's of that era, you could stick it in 'Low' gear on the shift selector, hit the throttle and just leave it there till it shifted into 2nd via the [overspeed] inhibitor. With the LS6, that 1-2 shift would have been a real 'kick in the pants', sideways, tire-squaller!!!

No way to know how many were built with what options, no way to know how many are still left. The value is determined by supply vs demand. I don't really think the transmission affects the value of a real (or as you say "original") LS6 car. More important is the car's documentation, provenance, correctness and condition.

There is a white LS-6 Convertible on flea-bay now. He has posted the statistics for the cars on the page. Nice looking car too! Easy to find if you look.

Back on ebay again. This LS6 has great paperwork but cannot seem to break the mid 60k.LS6 verts usually sell in the 140-180k range.

Maybe it has "matching numbers" rather than the actual original drivetrain. Do high value cars really sell on ebay?

Doubtful. The "big-money" folks don't 'do' eBay....

Ebay is good for the exposure, the deals on these big ticket vettes are made when auction ends.

This white LS6 was for sale in 2009 from another dealer with an asking price of 81k,believed to be a REAL LS6 but no paperwork. If you search this forum you will find the ad from 2009.

At this time there is no absolute exact answer available, however we do have some accurate information to extrapolate some figures from. All of the M22 special transmissions went into the LS6 Corvette except for 8 which went into the LT-1 ZR1. That leaves 66 of the 188 cars to have been equipped with either the TH400 or the M21 transmission.

I have further information to validate this breakdown.

The ebay listing for that LS6 convertible has their 'facts' all wrong. Several incorrect items with that car, and doesn't necessarily have the most desired drivetrain components.

Warren,is this LS6 in your registry ? Considering the car was ordered by GM for testing and evaluation is this one of the first LS6's ? If this is a REAL LS6 as claimed why are the bids so low ? Thanks Jerry
