Default Shifter Console Install - Help needed! Update - DONE

I'm installing a new (Wilcox) shifter console molding and having some trouble... I made all the AC/Heater control connections, laid in the console and it is butted up all the way to the left and right dash pads and radio bezel....BUT - I have trouble getting the shifter all the way to the park position AND the rear of the console does not line up with the mounting screw holes. I looks like it needs to go forward almost another inch but I'm all the way against the dash already.

Needless to say my parking brake console will not go on because the shifter console is too far back...

WTF am I doing wrong here ?!!!

I forgot to snap some pictures - I'll get my GF to send me some but I think I described it pretty well....

Please help - I'm ready for my new carpets and seats but this has to be worked out first !

Thanks

My radio was hung up on the trans hump and holding the upper console forward. I lifted the rear end up and the whole works moved back quite a bit. i also had to loosen and reposition the armrest support to allow the rear of the shift console to clear.

Same thing here last fall. Mine butted up against the gauge cluster very very tight. It really needed to go up another 1/4 inch or so. My control **** for the tep control hits on part of the frame below.
As soon as the weather warms up I will take it appart and make it 100% right. Not sure how that will happen but......
I know this doesn't help in any way...maybe to let you know your not the only one who has problems with this area. My cluster, center piece and brake console are all new for a 1972. My ebrake barely fit also, I had to kinda mash it down in place.

Jeff, I'm kind of test fitting mine and I noticed that the support for the center gauge console can be pivoted back and forth, if that can be believed. Is it possible to push the support forward?

From what I saw on mine, I can actually 'flex' mine forward just a bit. It's just a steel square that's attached at the bottom on top of the trans tunnel.

Hmmmmm....I'll check - but the front edges of the shifter console are pretty much touching the leading edges of the left & right dash pads as well.....

Anyone got any pictures ?

It's hold me up from finishing off the interior and days until the cruise are ticking away !

When you said it will not go into park I assumed that you have a A/T. The shift slide seals (those two black plastic strips) can hit or catch on the inside of the shift plate. Preventing the shift lever from moving all the way forward. Just a thought.

Look at how far the center console edges protrudes from the sides. I think the center console gauges is not 'back' far enough. The lip at the bottom of the center console gauges needs to go underneath the shifter console and you can see a cutout in the shifter console, just for that. That's why I was suggesting 'pushing it back' towards the front.

Another area of interference, may be the stereo bezel. I dont' think the stock bezel had a lip at the bottom.

You are correct it needs to come forward some. Are the studs from the gauge bezel in the slots for the console reinforcement? May not make a difference but when I have done mine I leave the shift plate off until last.

But notice that the edges of the shift console are already touching the edges of the left & right dash pads.....I'm out of room there regardless of the center gauge console.....

PS - thanks for helping....!!!

Any other ideas ?

The bezel may have to move up thus moving the dash pads up some. I will get you a photo of mine and post it.

True! I'm curious whether the forward edges of the shift console go to the outside or the inside of the gauge console, or do they butt up against the center gauges?

Looks like this one, they actually pushed the center console gauge lower corner on the right, to the outside.... Gotta be a better way to fit it.

Try loosing the screws across the top dash pad as you try to move it forward. Here is a photo of mine it is a reproduction from C. A.
