Did you mark which distributor port was actually connected to #1 cylinder before you removed the old wires? There is a 'normal' method for positioning the plug wires in the distributor cap, but very frequently an owner or a mechanic will "re-clock" the distributor by shifting ALL of the wires 1 position from that 'normal' setup so that the distributor vacuum advance can won't interfere with some other hardware on the intake manifold. If you didn't follow the 'old' #1 wire from the spark plug to the distributor, you really don't know how it was hooked up before. You might try shifting all the wires 1 position CCW to see if you can start it there; if that doesn't work, you can reverse direction 2 positions CW [so that it would be 1 spot CW from where you are now] and check it there.

But, if you know for sure that the plug wires are routed the same as they had been, another item could have been installed in error or be defective. Anything in or on the distributor could cause an ignition problem. A wire could have been bent and lost connection, etc. etc. Just try to mentally back-track all of your activity under the hood and check various possibilities that could cause a "no start" problem.

18436572 is the correct firing order so you have that right. If you did not change points or anything else then I suspect you started on the wrong position on the distributor cap or you put them on in the wrong direction on the distributor cap. They should go clockwise with the number 1 wire at about 8:00 looking at it from the front of the car.

where on the distributor cap did you start by plugging in #1 wire? i always mark my #1 wire position with a piece of masking tape or something, if you start right, and go clockwise with firing order, you can't hardly go wrong, unless you get R/H and L/H confused on engine block, L/H is driver side, and plug wires 1,3,5,7 go on that side (front to back)

also, (i know this doesn't help you a lot now), but sometimes best to change one plug wire at a time. Rick

Are the wire terminals pushed all the way down in the cap and all the way on the plugs. I have had many problems in the past getting the wires to snap all the way down. If they pull off easily then they are not snapped on.

I've done it.... All plug wires 1 off, wouldn't start, was so mad, cooled off, went back, spotted the obvious mistake.
