I'm trapped in the "while I'm there doing it" phase under my 1975 driver. So I'm thinking, while I'm redoing the breaks I might as well do shocks too.
It's not a huge expense and since I'd prefer to check off the undercarriage winter 2013 job as complete and not have to go back down there for a while, I'm going to put new shocks on her.
But which is best? I know I can get "stockish" shocks. I know Bilstein puts out a good product. What I don't know is what is the best shock for the dollar that will produce a better ride.
As always, many thanks for the input and time, fellas.
I put Bilstein HD on the 76 and it made a world of difference. Granted any new shock would have helped but if you want a comfortable cruiser, I believe spending some extra coin on a great shock is worth it to me.
If you do a search here, folks like the Bilstein sport too for a stiffer handling, for as they say "spirited" driving!
Anyway, that is my vote. Do some shopping around for best price and shipping.
Delco or Monroe for stock. KYB for an upgrade. Bilsteins are good but over kill for a driver/cruiser.
A couple of years ago, I had my rear suspension rebuilt. The guy who did the work gets a lot of business from Austin Speed Shop, and does great work.
When I picked the car up, I told him I was going to be replacing the shocks and asked him if it was worth getting Bilstein's or should I use KYB's, his answer was to go with KYB's. I got the KYB GR-2's and have been very happy ever since.
Yep - lots of people justifying paying way more money than they had to. Did you people not read the OP's statement about 'best for the dollar'?
KYB's are a very good shock, better than the shocks when these cars were new. If someone needs Bilsteins for a good ride, then my guess there is something wrong with your suspension.

Whatever. Bilsteins on both of my corvettes here. I guess I just like wasting my money.
I have had Monroe (all 4 leaked in 2 years), and KYB. I have Bilstein Sport in my vette (all performance) and Bilstein HD in my SUV. My vette handles awesome, but has a very firm ride. My SUV had stock Ford shocks and Monroe shocks, but handles and rides better than ever with the Bilstein HD's. Bilstein's are definitely worth the money.
