Default Driver side mirror question

my 74 vette has the std original side driver mirror with it. I suppose its chrome.

anyway ,...... is there a way to tighten up the swivel at the head so the adjustment will stay set . I'm tired of resetting the mirror position every time I open /close the door. It seems to be getting worse .

Hi ls4,
The swivel ball has a spring clip on it to give it tension.
The only access to it is by removing the glass.
It can be tightened.
There are threads about that procedure.
Regards,
Alan

I have the same problem on he passenger side...a little harder to reach than the drivers side (74 too).

I wish these cars came with curved mirrors...you know "objects in the mirror are closer than they appear", that would help alot.

Rather than removing the mirror glass, drilling the rivets out inside and behind where the mirror glass was and then messing around inside the mirror I did this (there is a detailed and very useful thread in here somewhere with full step by step instructions on a far more professional fix than what I did ) .
After putting on my Mickey Mouse ears I grabbed a sharp screw driver and gauled up the round part of the pivot ball where no one will ever see my 'handiwork'. Do this with the mirror set to a position no one would ever use and all your scratch marks will be inside the back of the mirror housing - invisible. This seems to put enough friction back into the system to keep my mirrors where I adjusted them (even at grossly illegal speeds). So far so good . Maybe I'll do it the right way next winter when the car hibernates .

Thanks Alan and everybody for the suggestions. My mirror is one of Paragons nice items from like the first or second year they offered the reproduction. Its been on the car several decades . Maybe its time to replace it once more.
